2010 Ugly Car Contest Winner: Bob McGowan of Fremont, CA
After the public votes were tallied, the winner of Alliance Credit Union’s Second Annual “Ugly Car Contest” is a 1979 Datsun 210 hatchback owned by Bob McGowan of Fremont, CA. McGowan, who received the most votes from among the five finalists, will be presented with his $5,000 grand prize during a special ceremony to be held at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, October 19 at Alliance CU—Fremont Financial Center (in the Fremont Hub Shopping Center), 39174 Argonaut Way, Fremont, CA.
The public selected the winner by voting on the Alliance Fan Page on Facebook. The other four finalists, as selected by the Alliance staff, were: Jeanne Young from California, and Mike Witherspoon, Will Nabors, and Robert Pridgen from North Carolina.
McGowan bought his Datsun back in 1982. It now sports more than 302,000 miles. He said that raising three children on a single income has meant setting financial priorities–getting a new car was not one of them.
“I never thought I’d be happy to have the ugliest car around,” he said, upon hearing the news. “I’ve been in need of a newer car for some time now and hinting to my wife as we drove around I’d challenge her to point out one car in worse condition than mine, just one, but she never could. Winning the Alliance Credit Union’s ugly car contest will finally allow me to purchase a newer vehicle.”
McGowan plans on using the $5,000 toward the purchase of a used car.
During the Ugly Car Contest, members of the community were encouraged to upload photos of their clunkers to Alliance’s Fan Page on Facebook. Last year, the Alliance received 23 entries for the inaugural competition, won by a vandalized Saturn S-Series coup owned by Jean-Pierre Saintard of Wilmington, NC. This year, the number of entries nearly doubled to 43.
